Effect of Planting Depth on Stem, Leaf, and Root Growth of Lilium spp. in Forcing

Abstract
This study aimed to identify physiological responses and activities of endogenous GA-like substances by different planting depths (1/2 bulb exposure, 0, 3, 6 §¯ deep) add cold treatment periods (0, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 days at 5¡É respectively) in forcing of Lilium species. Days to shoot emergence and flowering were shortened by longer cold treatment, and plant height decreased. On the other hand, stem diameter, flower number and bulb growth differed among Lilium spp. depending an the duration of cold treatment. Especially; days to shoot emergence were little different even though ¢¥Gelria¢¥ was cold treated more than 60 days and ¢¥Jolanda¢¥ and ¢¥Dream Land¢¥, more than 75 days at 5¡É. Whereas that of ¢¥Casablanca¢¥ were shortened by 90 days cold treatment. The activity of GA-like substances in inner or outer bulbs increased by cold treatment as compared to that in bulbs untreated. Also, growth response in accordance with planting depth varied among species of Lilium. that is, when bulbs of ¢¥Gelria¢¥ and ¢¥Gasablanca¢¥ were planted deep, stem elongation was accelerated but days to flowering were delayed. However ¢¥Jolanda¢¥ and ¢¥Dream Land¢¥ were little difference except that days to flowering were accelerated by planting depth. In conclusion, the results indicated that the bulbs of ¢¥Gelria¢¥ and ¢¥Casablanca¢¥ could produce high quality of cut flower in forcing as planted deeply after cold treatment of 60 and 90 days respectively, but the belts of ¢¥Jolanda¢¥ and ¢¥Dream Land¢¥ could do as planted shallowly after cold treatment of 75 days.
